Design considerations for beds and designer furniture in bedrooms

The bedroom is the home's most intimate room, and the owner's most personal space. Unlike most other rooms in a house or apartment, the bedroom is rarely seen by anyone other than its owner, and so therefore can be a true expression of taste and personality.

We spend a third of hour lives asleep in bed, and so choosing furniture and a bed is incredibly important. Clearly, for much of the time we spend in bed, we're oblivious to our surroundings, but those moments before and after sleep shape our days. A beautiful bedroom, where taste, style and designer furniture combine to form a perfect space, is a wonderful place to start and end the day. Choice of beds and bedroom furniture therefore needs careful planning.

King sized beds are ideal for most couples - they offer luxurious space into which both people can stretch out and relax. However a bed that is too big for its room will dominate the available space, and make the room feel cramped and claustrophobic. In rooms of medium size, double beds are often the answer. Bear in mind when choosing beds, however, that as an absolute minimum, the bed should be 6-9 inches longer than the tallest occupant.

Space should also be considered when choosing a style of bed. A four-poster will need a greater total space than most contemporary beds and will draw the eye away from any other design choices you've made. If your choice of fine designer bedroom furniture is detracted from by a poor bed choice then the room will not 'work' as a whole. Larger rooms can take larger king-size beds, and in fact, if beds and their dressings are part of the overall design (as they should be), smaller single beds or double beds are often not appropriate.

Space is also an issue, in the sense of space around an object, when choosing other bedroom furniture. Consider how much space you and your partner might need when moving around the bedroom or dressing. Designer furniture comes no more luxurious than in the shape of a well-built wardrobe giving floor-to-ceiling storage. You might also need to consider a dressing table, chest of drawers, bedside tables and occasional cupboards. Bedrooms are very easy to clutter up, not just with furniture but with books, clocks, glasses, magazines, clothes and other objects left lying around on bedside tables and chairs. Will you have enough storage of the right type?

Your bedroom furniture should be chosen carefully to present your personality and taste. Each piece should complement the next. Recent design trends are encouraging a mixing of old and new, with contemporary, modern furniture mingling with more traditional bedroom accessories. Conversely, seeing traditionally-styled beds in contemporary settings, such as loft conversions, is becoming increasingly common. Lighting is one area of course where a more traditional design can utilise modern technology, such as energy-efficient or halogen bulbs. Remember that your bedroom is your most personal design statement - feel free to mix and match styles and ideas, and come up with a bedroom that's as unique as you are!
