Several older homes in Phila. have iron stars above the doors. What is the significance of this star?

I've heard several stories such as something to do with horses and something to do with the structure. It seems to be more than just decorative and its often on older homes in the Center City area.

The stars often hold bolts that connect through the bricks into the floors to keep the walls from bowing outwards. They are not just for decoration.
