unique bunk beds

How should we arrange our dorm beds?
My room mate and I are moving in soon at WVU but we can't decide how to arrange the beds.
First off, our dorm is kinda unique, it has to separate rooms ( one small and one large) separated by a wall with an open doorway. It's pretty big. One bed is in the small room and one is in the large room. We kinda want the large room without beds so it can be like a living room. So should we bunk the beds or try to cram them into the small room or what. I mean is it weird for college students to have bunk beds. What would you do. (my roommate and I are like best friends so he's not a stranger or anything)
I actually one semester had a roommate who wanted the beds bunked. I was the first one moved in, and my brother & I had already debunked the beds (at Illinois, where I went, all dorm rooms were set up with bunk beds; in theory, you had to apply to the janitors to debunk them). He came in and decided that he wanted the top bunk. Okay, whatever.
But in my experience even with the bunking as the default in the dorm, two person rooms rarely left the beds bunked. Most people arranged the beds so that the long legs went on one bed, and the short legs on the other, so that one bed was about three feet tall with storage below and the other was only a foot or so tall. And most people used the drawers - the bunk beds were set up with a set of two big drawers under the bottom bunk - under the three foot high bed.
In law school, the rooms were set up as singles, but the furniture was designed to loft the beds if desired. The desk would go under one end of the bed, while the wardrobe (there were no closets, each room had a standup wardrobe) would go under the other end. Lots of people lofted their beds; I never really understood why.
Putting the two beds in the smaller room makes some sense, as it makes the other room in essence the living room. In most dorms, you'd make the bed and in essence it would serve as a sofa. I had a roommate drop out one semester, and apparently not take a refund on the room, so I got the room as a single the whole semester. The lower bed, then, served as a sofa - I had a 19 inch tv, in those days most dorm rooms only had a 13 inch, and my room became the party room. You can L shape the beds, or put them along the walls parallel to each other, depending on how big the room is.
